Ledger of Manly and Edmund Miles documenting New York state and Genessee County, Michigan farm and furniture-making business, 1801-ca. 1847. The ledger includes some Miles family birth records. The collection also includes letters exchanged between Harriet Miles Begole (wife of Josiah Begole and sister of Manly Miles) and her sister Mary Louise in New York State, 1840-1845; two scrapbooks (1860s-ca. 1917) of Harriet Miles Begole containing clippings and memorabilia about members of the Miles and Begole families; and photograph albums.

Begole was born in N.Y. (State) on Jan. 20, 1815. He left for Mich. Territory at the age of 21, settling in what is now Flint (Mich.). In 1839 he married Harriet A. Miles and began work on a farm. After holding several local political positions, he served as County Treasurer, 1856-1864; State Senator, 1871-1872; a member of Congress, 1873-1875; and Governor of Mich., 1883-1885. He died at Flint on June 6, 1896. GAR Post 127 was named for Billy Begole, who was probably his son. No information is ...
